A breakup simulator where the relationship may actually kill you

“Sweetheart” was announced this week, and its developers are calling it a “first-person narrative-driven horror breakup simulator.”

That sentence did most of the selling for me.

Genie Boy Games is developing the title for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC, with a release planned for 2027. The game mixes horror and comedy around a relationship trapped inside a repeating nightmare.

The story draws on the glossy television culture of the early 2000s, particularly the era when major networks turned young people into stars and packaged their private lives as entertainment. Developer Ben Escobar said the game explores dependent identities, abuse within relationships and the mental-health stigma surrounding that period.

That is a strange foundation for horror, and I mean that as a compliment. We already have enough abandoned hospitals and dark forests to last several lifetimes. Making a horror game out of the emotional machinery behind manufactured celebrity couples gives “Sweetheart” a very different playground.

The title also arrives at a good moment for narrative horror games.

Developers have become increasingly comfortable building horror around social pressure, relationships and unreliable perception instead of giving everybody a flashlight and putting a monster in the basement.

Although, to be fair, “Sweetheart” could still have a monster in the basement. Nobody has said otherwise.

For now we have the platforms, the 2027 window and a breakup apparently bad enough to require multiple attempts at escape.

Some relationships need therapy and this one apparently needs a save point.
