Ari Aster has more “Hereditary” in a drawer

Ari Aster revealed this week that he wrote a prequel to “Hereditary,” even though he is not sure it will ever be made. Variety quoted Aster saying, “I wrote a prequel to this,” while Deadline reported that he added it never feels like the right time to make it. Bloody Disgusting also covered the reveal on June 8 after the comment surfaced at an event.

That is exactly the sort of horror news that lights people up fast, because “Hereditary” still sits heavily in modern genre conversation. It was not just a successful debut. It became one of those films people keep returning to when they talk about grief horror, family-collapse horror, cult dread, or the late-2010s shift in mainstream genre prestige. So hearing there is more of that world on paper immediately invites a lot of speculation.

The more interesting part, honestly, is Aster’s hesitation. Plenty of filmmakers talk about expanding a hit. Fewer admit that a project exists but still may never happen because the timing feels wrong. That uncertainty keeps the whole thing from reading like franchise machinery. Right now it sounds more like a buried script than an active greenlight.
