“Evil Dead Burn” leaves the theater covered in blood

Anyone who missed “Evil Dead Burn” on the big screen can now bring the Deadites home. Sébastien Vaniček’s film arrived on digital purchase and rental platforms on August 4, less than two weeks after its theatrical release. A 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD edition is scheduled for September 22.

The sixth “Evil Dead” film operates as a standalone story, following a grieving widow played by Souheila Yacoub as demonic forces tear into her life. Sam Raimi selected Vaniček after the French director’s feature “Infested,” a spider horror movie that did not exactly advertise mercy.

That standalone approach has served the franchise well. “Evil Dead” no longer needs Ash Williams standing in the doorway to prove its identity.

“Evil Dead Rise” shifted the carnage into a condemned apartment building, while “Burn” brought in another director and another group of victims without pretending the Book of the Dead had suddenly learned restraint.

The digital release arrives quickly, but that is becoming normal for theatrical horror. People who skipped the cinema can now judge the damage at home, where every crunch, scream and bad decision will probably sound great through the neighbors’ wall.
