“Insidious: Out of the Further” opens with $60 million worldwide

The sixth “Insidious” movie is officially out, and the Further still has a pulse.

“Insidious: Out of the Further” opened on August 21 and earned $25.3 million domestically plus roughly $35 million internationally, putting its worldwide opening above $60 million. The film reportedly cost about $18 million to make.

This chapter moves away from the Lambert family again and centers on Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, a woman who can enter the Further and bring souls back with her. Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers also star, while Lin Shaye returns as Elise Rainier. Jacob Chase wrote and directed the film, with James Wan and Leigh Whannell remaining involved as producers.

Reviews have been mixed, and some critics are clearly feeling franchise fatigue at this point. Fair. We are six movies deep into a supernatural universe built around astral projection, red doors and people repeatedly making the terrible decision to walk deeper into a place literally called the Further.

The money tells another story. An $18 million horror movie pulling more than $60 million globally in its first weekend is exactly why studios keep these franchises alive long after critics start sharpening knives.

And honestly, Lin Shaye showing up as Elise again is practically tradition now. At this rate she could haunt this franchise forever and nobody would question it.
