The Best Underground Horror
Netflix finally showed more of “Below” this week, and the creature is still staying underwater.
The new trailer follows Josh Hartnett as Calvin, a fisherman in a remote Newfoundland community where something in the ocean has started attacking people. Charlie Heaton plays his son Wade, while Mackenzie Davis joins the story as marine researcher Fonda Howander.
The six-episode limited series premieres October 8.
Creator Jesse McKeown set the story in Newfoundland and the production actually filmed there, including work on the ocean rather than building the whole thing around green screens. Hartnett and Heaton spent time around local fishermen and communities while preparing for their roles.
That physical setting could do half the horror work before the monster even surfaces. Cold Atlantic water, small fishing communities, isolation and an unseen animal moving underneath a boat have been reliable nightmare fuel since long before “Jaws.”
The trailer wisely keeps the creature hidden. We see panic, injuries, bodies, strange symptoms and people staring at the water like they already regret living beside it.
Please keep it hidden for a while.
Creature movies lose a little blood pressure every time marketing decides we need a full-body glamour shot of the monster three weeks before release.
