The Best Underground Horror
Look, I've been watching this man play horror games on YouTube since I was in middle school, and I genuinely did not have "Markiplier changes the entire independent film distribution model" on my 2026 bingo card. But here we are.
Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach's self-financed sci-fi horror film Iron Lung became one of 2026's standout success stories, grossing more than $50 million worldwide against a $3 million budget following its January 30 theatrical release. The man wrote it. Directed it. Edited it. Starred in it.
Funded it himself. And then distributed it without a single major studio holding his hand. That puts Iron Lung in the top 40 highest-grossing independent films of all time, sitting alongside A24's Midsommar and Jake Gyllenhaal's Nightcrawler. Let that sink in for a second.
Now, after all that chaos, Markiplier announced at Cannes Film Festival that Iron Lung will premiere digitally on YouTube Movies & TV as a paid exclusive on May 31, 2026. And honestly? The fact that he announced it at Cannes is sending me. This dude started on YouTube filming himself screaming at video games and he's now walking the same festival circuit as prestige cinema royalty. The audacity. The vision. We love it.
The road to that digital release wasn't exactly smooth though. YouTube's platform policies prevented straightforward digital sales on his own channel, delaying the home release fans had been desperately waiting for. Rather than just taking whatever deal was on the table, Markiplier negotiated directly with YouTube leadership to create new pathways — not just for himself, but for every independent creator who comes after him. He's not just thinking about his own bag. That's genuinely different energy from how Hollywood usually operates.
The film itself follows a convict named Simon in a post-apocalyptic future after an event called "The Quiet Rapture." He's tasked with piloting a tiny submarine called the Iron Lung through an ocean of blood on a desolate moon, searching for missing stars and planets. A blood ocean. On a moon. In a submarine. This man said "what if we did something completely unhinged" and Hollywood collectively said "we would never greenlight that" and he said "I don't need you."
Mark your calendars. May 31. YouTube Movies. The revolution will be streaming.
