MGM+ has ordered “The Black Tapes” straight to series, with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau taking the lead as Dr. Richard Strand.
The new supernatural horror series will run for eight episodes and begins production in Vancouver in January 2027. It is based on the podcast created by Terry Miles and Paul Bae, which launched in 2015 and built its story around paranormal investigations, recorded evidence and a skeptic who keeps finding cases that refuse to stay explainable.
Coster-Waldau plays Strand, a psychiatrist with a mysterious past who works with scientist Alex Regan to investigate hauntings, possessions, disappearances and other supposedly paranormal cases collected on the titular black tapes.
That arrangement is where the fun starts. Strand is trying to debunk the supernatural, while the cases keep dragging him closer to something much larger. The official premise eventually pushes the pair into an occult conspiracy that has apparently been developing for centuries.
Miles and Bae are involved in the adaptation as writers and executive producers, alongside John Rogers, Jennifer Court and Kearie Peak.
Coster-Waldau already has enough horror history to make this casting easy to picture. Long before “Game of Thrones,” he starred in Ole Bornedal’s Danish thriller “Nightwatch,” and later appeared in Andy Muschietti’s “Mama.” He can play skepticism without making the character emotionally dead, which Strand absolutely needs.
“The Black Tapes” podcast ran on uncertainty. A recording sounded wrong. A photograph suggested something impossible. A witness remembered too much or not enough. The show kept pulling at those threads until the rational explanations started looking weaker than the supernatural ones.
MGM+ has not announced a premiere date yet.
If they keep that slow paranoia intact, this could get ugly in a very good way.
