The Best Underground Horror
British horror “Pendle 1612” has found its leads.
Maddie Evans from “House of the Dragon” will star alongside newcomer Ella Moss and Gemma Laurie in the new docu-horror film from twin filmmakers Liam Bashford and Kyle Bashford. Production begins at the end of September on location around Pendle in Lancashire.
Evans plays Amy, with Moss as Hannah and Laurie as Meg. The three young women are making a documentary about the disappearance of Amy’s older sister, which takes them into the countryside surrounding Pendle Hill.
Anyone familiar with English witch-trial history can already see where this is headed.
The Pendle witch trials took place in 1612 and remain among Britain’s most notorious witchcraft cases. The filmmakers grew up in Lancashire and are using the actual landscape rather than shipping the story off somewhere that looks vaguely old and foggy.
Found footage and historical witch panic can work very well together. Modern characters arrive with cameras, convinced they are documenting the past, then discover the past has its own opinion about being disturbed.
No release date has been announced yet.
Maybe somebody should tell Amy to investigate literally anything else.
