The Best Underground Horror

Spring Break at Lake Victoria
Because I was on my college’s boxing team, I never got to experience a wild spring break party. We always had our regional tournament around that time. So, I spent my spring break training in the ring. Luckily, I can experience those bashes I missed vicariously through “Piranha 3D.”
I first saw this one around 2011, not long after it came out. I watched it with my old high school friends the summer after we graduated from college. Is it for this nostalgia-soaked reason I have fond memories of this flick? Or is it because of all the ridiculous comedy and absurd violence?
The Story
It’s spring break, which means thousands of wild college students have descended upon the town of Lake Victoria to party like it’s 2010. Little do they know, an underground tremor has released an army of carnivorous piranhas lying in wait to feast upon their flesh.
Honey’s Cut
One of the worst crimes a movie can commit is being boring. And “Piranha 3D” is anything but boring. Even though not much happens in the first half of the movie, I still found myself enjoying the story. It was like watching an “American Pie” movie. I caught myself laughing out loud more than a few times, which is rare for me. I usually find humor in horror/comedies too juvenile or try-hard. But I can say “Piranha 3D” is a legitimately funny movie.
Before this movie, Alexandre Aja directed some truly disturbing films: “High Tension” and “The Hills Have Eyes” remake from 2006. Those movies are deadly serious, but he uses this to his advantage. His gory visuals are what make this movie right at home in the horror genre. The piranhas don’t just bite their victims a few times and move on. They swarm around their prey, ripping chunks of flesh from their bodies, until only a pulpy skeleton remains. It’s no surprise that they went through 80,000 gallons of fake blood during filming.
The most memorable part of this movie is when the piranhas attack the massive spring break party and chaos ensues. Where “Jaws” gave us a fake-out for the shark attack at the Fourth of July celebration, “Piranha 3D” delivers the carnage, cranked up to 11.
Something interesting is that this scene focuses more on the damage humans do to each other; much worse than the violence the killer fish unleash.
If the chaos and gore didn’t hit so hard, this movie would be forgettable schlock. However, Aja takes all the violence from “The Hills Have Eyes” and puts it into this sex-charged comedy. It’s a good balance that helps this one stand out. If it had leaned too hard into the dumb humor, or taken itself too seriously, it wouldn’t have been nearly as memorable.

Honey’s Final Thought
As I was watching “Piranha 3D,” I realized something. Even though I was having one of the roughest weeks in recent memory, this goofy movie took me away from all that. While it only lasted 80 minutes, I wasn’t worrying about anything going on in my life. I was fully engrossed in this world of killer fish devouring college kids in amazingly gruesome ways.
Is this movie ridiculous? Well, considering the sequel is called “Piranha 3DD” (Double D, get it?), I think it’s safe to say yes. But here’s the thing — movies like this are just as important as the deep, thoughtful horror that makes us reflect or feel something.
We face the daily grind of rent, bills, jobs, stress. Do we always need horror to dissect the world or dig into trauma? Sometimes, we just need to laugh. Sometimes we need dumb gore and spring break mayhem. Sometimes, we just want to shut off our brains and enjoy the chaos.
And isn’t that why we love horror in the first place? Because it can be anything. It can be brutal, tragic, and clever. Or it can be a blood-soaked feeding frenzy with porn stars and killer fish. Any way you slice it, horror is whatever you need it to be.
