Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s “The X-Files” reboot to series, so we can finally stop calling it a pilot and start wondering what the hell he is going to put in those case files.
Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel lead the new series as two FBI agents assigned to a long-shuttered division investigating unexplained phenomena. They are new characters rather than replacements named Mulder and Scully, which is probably the smartest decision anybody could make here.
Coogler wrote and directed the pilot and remains executive producer. Jennifer Yale will serve as showrunner, while original “X-Files” creator Chris Carter is also an executive producer.
The original series survived because it could jump from aliens and government conspiracies into mutants, occult horror, parasites and completely bizarre monster-of-the-week episodes without losing its identity.
“Home” scared the hell out of people. “Squeeze” gave us Eugene Tooms. “The Host” put the Flukeman into television history, which is quite an achievement for something that basically looks like a radioactive tapeworm wearing a human suit.
Trying to recreate Mulder and Scully would be pointless. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson had a chemistry that became inseparable from the show itself. New agents give Coogler somewhere else to go without spending every episode doing an imitation of 1995.
He is also coming into this after “Sinners,” so letting him loose on paranormal investigations is a very attractive proposition.
No premiere date has been announced yet.
