Something ugly followed this family out of the ground in “Effigy”

First-look images arrived this week for Australian supernatural horror movie “Effigy,” which has now completed production.

Set in 1989 England, the film follows the Marsh family after the discovery of a mysterious effigy doll triggers a violent haunting. Whatever is behind the disturbances begins focusing its attention on the family’s daughter, eventually drawing two paranormal investigators into the case.

Myles McEwen and Ripley Stevens directed the film. South Australian actor Chris Gun, who played Noel Gallagher in “Better Man,” co-stars. The filmmakers previously made “Nightfall: A Paranormal Investigation.”

The 1989 setting immediately gives the movie a nice advantage. No phone cameras solving half the problem. No Googling the cursed doll while standing in the kitchen. If something starts banging around upstairs, congratulations, you are going upstairs.

The film also carries psychological and religious elements alongside the haunting, with its story touching on depression, identity and faith. The first images are our earliest proper look at the production after filming wrapped.

There is no announced release date yet, so “Effigy” is still early on the public side of its journey.

But cursed dolls have been ruining fictional families for decades, and clearly nobody in horror has learned to stop digging weird little objects out of the earth.
