Don’t Blow It
After putting on the Midnight Terrors Podcast live events in Ohio, my co-host Kevin, Marcus and Luke of the Reviewed to Death podcast, horror author Z.C. Krol and I went to see a movie. We chose the recently released “Whistle.”
The Story
A group of teenagers come across an Aztec death whistle. When they blow it, it summons their future deaths to hunt them down. It makes me think of “It Follows” meets “Final Destination.”
Honey’s Cut
Centering a movie on an ancient artifact is a pretty cool idea. Especially the Aztec death whistle, as these items were used in religious ceremonies and human sacrifices. So, right off the bat, it’s an eerie object without it even being in a horror film.
While it’s an interesting idea, this movie is largely forgettable. Maybe I’m getting old, but I couldn’t relate to the teenagers in this movie at all. We’re a long way from 2005.
While the first half just kind of follows the characters around their lives and we see all the issues they have, things pick up in the last act. The death scenes can be downright grotesque, which will please the gorehounds. That being said, the effects are serviceable, but nothing groundbreaking.
Overall, “Whistle” is an interesting concept, but it fell flat for me, and I’m not really sure why. I didn’t dislike it. But it also didn’t blow me away. Some criticisms are that it is derivative of the “Final Destination” movies. Yeah, there are similarities, but “Whistle” is original enough that it doesn’t feel like a knockoff. It’s one of those middle-of-the-road films that is entertaining for its runtime, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Honey’s Final Thought
This is the first new horror movie I’ve seen in 2026. I saw it with all my friends, so that was a memorable experience. Honestly, that was probably the best way to watch. It’s not something we needed to pay close attention to, and we could just chill and goof off (we were the only ones in the theater).
If you go see “Whistle,” go see it with some friends. Have fun, enjoy the gore, and be entertained for an hour or so. That’s a solid way to spend a night.
