The Best Underground Horror
D.R. Kane is not just a horror author; he is a long-time friend of mine. We’ve been buds since long before either of us even thought about writing a book.
He came out swinging with his series, “The Makers of Darkness,” an apocalyptic saga that spans four books.
Now he’s returned with an entirely new story, “All That We Destroy.” The novel follows a man who buys an old house in Florida. But as the nights drag on, he realizes that not only is there something off about the house, but also with the land it is built upon.
D.R. took some time out of his chaotic schedule to talk with me about his latest release.
R. Jacob Honeybrook: Welcome D.R., and congrats on your new release. So, what’s this new one about? What can readers expect?
D.R. Kane: It’s a different take on the haunted house story. There’s still some of the visceral imagery readers know from “The Makers” series, but this one is meant to get under your skin. It’s about bone-deep fear, the kind that has you pulling the covers up at night while still needing to know what the hell is really happening.
RJH: What are some of the themes you explored in this one?
DRK: Other than paranormal horror, it explores the fear of not knowing where evil comes from, and how it can be rooted in places, history, things that feel familiar and safe, and of course, people.

RJH: What inspired you to write a story, not only about a haunted house, but about cursed land?
DRK: Someone I’m close with lives on a property that is similar to that in the book. One time I was visiting, and one of my weird ideas came to me. I was like, ‘what if this place really went off the rails.’ Then I started writing about it and it certainly did.
RJH: What was it like going from writing a series, like “The Makers of Darkness,” to writing a standalone story in “All That We Destroy?”
DRK: Honestly the only change was me forcing myself to be patient. This one took a bit longer to write than the others. For someone with my attention span that’s a challenge.
RJH: What are some of the differences in your new book, compared to the “Makers” series?
DRK: This one relies less on shock value and gore. Don’t worry, there’s still enough for fans of my other works. But it’s scarier, more unsettling, and will keep readers wondering until the last page.

RJH: This is your fifth book in two years. What motivates you to write so much?
DRK: Man, I’ve always had these crazy ideas in my head and wanted to get them out. I think it just took me until this stage in my life to be capable of organizing them enough on the page that they were coherent enough for someone else to read.
RJH: What is the most important thing you’ve learned in these past two years as a published author?
DRK: Latching onto and organizing my many erratic ideas. I feel like my mind is like having a bucket of confetti dropped above me in a windstorm, and I have to desperately snatch at what I can get before it blows away. I’ll have a dozen thoughts come to me at random times and find myself chasing a million different tangents without ever latching onto one. Now, I find ways to try to jot them down for later projects or scenes.
RJH: What can readers expect next from you?
DRK: I have a collection of shorts I’m working on and another standalone that is in its infancy. Where they’ll go, who knows, but they will of course, be horror.
