The Best Underground Horror
Cannes gave horror fans a real item to chew on this week when Dario Argento unveiled a new thriller trilogy at the Marché du Film’s Fantastic Pavilion. Variety reported that Argento presented first footage from “Flesh of My Flesh,” directed by Gabriele Altobelli for Mattia’s Film, and that the trilogy also includes “The Girl With Crystal Eyes” and “Black Fairy.” Argento was also honored there with the Keys to the Fantastic Pavilion award.
That is enough to get genre people moving, because Argento is not a name that drifts through horror history on reputation alone. He is tied to some of the most visually aggressive and influential work the genre ever produced. A new slate attached to him is going to attract immediate scrutiny, curiosity, and a lot of side-eye from fans who want to know whether the old fire is still there.
The interesting part now is not pretending the trilogy is already a triumph. It is watching how these projects develop once footage, casting, and release plans start appearing in public. For this week, the concrete update is simple: the trilogy is out in the open, the first film has already shown material, and Cannes gave the announcement a serious stage.
