“Verity” Takes Colleen Hoover Into Darker Psychological Thriller Territory

“Verity” is moving from bestseller shelves to the big screen with Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett leading the cast. The film adapts Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller about Lowen Ashleigh, a ghostwriter hired to finish the book series of Verity Crawford after Verity becomes incapacitated. Once Lowen moves into the Crawford home, she finds an unpublished manuscript that turns the job into something much darker.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the film is directed by Michael Showalter and set to arrive in theaters on October 2, 2026. Johnson plays Lowen, Hathaway plays Verity, and Hartnett plays Jeremy Crawford. The first trailer released in April leans into erotic thriller energy, psychological horror elements, and the disturbing questions around Verity’s manuscript.

This is the Colleen Hoover adaptation with the sharpest genre angle. “It Ends With Us” and “Regretting You” live more clearly in romantic drama territory, but “Verity” is built around suspicion, obsession, hidden writing, and a house full of things nobody should be reading without consequences.

The real test will be the ending. Hoover readers have argued over the book for years, and the film now has to make a decision that will either satisfy people, annoy them, or start the whole fight again online. That may be exactly what Amazon MGM wants. A clean little controversy is free marketing with better lighting.
