“Widow’s Bay” arrives on Apple TV with a cursed New England island, a desperate mayor, and the kind of local legends nobody should be ignoring. Matthew Rhys stars as Tom Loftis, the mayor of a struggling town that he wants to turn into a tourist destination, even though the people around him keep warning that the island is cursed. Apple describes the series as a mystery thriller about a town where old stories start happening again.
The series comes from creator Katie Dippold, with Hiro Murai among the executive producers and directors. The cast includes Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, and Kingston Rumi Southwick. Bloody Disgusting reported that the show makes its global debut on April 29 with the first two episodes, placing it directly in the spring horror conversation.
The fun of the premise is that Tom is not some noble monster hunter. He is a mayor trying to fix a town with bad reception, broke energy, and locals who already know the island has problems he does not want to admit. Then the cursed-town stories start moving from folklore into actual danger.
“Widow’s Bay” has a strong hook for horror fans who like strange towns, coastal dread, and supernatural problems wrapped in messy local politics. A mayor trying to sell tourism while the island itself starts acting up is a very good headache. Bad for him, useful for us.
